Your Vision, Not Mine

After years of watching plans get made for communities instead of with them, I decided to do things differently.

Meet Mitchell!

Mitchell Avis, MSc, RPP, MCIP

Owner & Community Planner

After years of working in government and consulting, I saw how often plans were created for communities rather than with them. I wanted to do things differently - to support First Nations in building plans that reflect your values, your needs, and your priorities.

I often work independently, but not alone. For projects that need environmental, mapping, or technical expertise, I collaborate with a trusted network of professionals to bring the right people to the table.

Whether I’m helping a First Nation update a land use plan, supporting community engagement, or facilitating difficult conversations, my approach is always the same: listen deeply, work collaboratively, and deliver something that actually gets used.

Outside of work you will probably find me volunteering with Red Raccoon Bike Rescue, out sailing or cycling, learning photography and guitar, and endlessly chasing the perfect homemade pizza!

WHY CHOOSE AVISION PLANNING?

Meaningful Relationships

Good planning requires building real relationships - and that starts by spending time on the land and with the people who call it home.

Experienced

I offer 13+ years of professional planning experience including 9+ years working directly with First Nations on land use, engagement, and policy.

Good Value

I offer customized rates to First Nations so more of your budget stays where it matters most - within your community.

Impact Driven

I believe businesses have a responsibility to do good. As a white settler working with First Nations, I am committed to using this work as a vehicle for real, meaningful impact - not just for deliverables.

Small Firm Flexibility

Working independently means I can move quickly, adapt my approach to your needs, and stay focused on you - without the bureaucracy of a larger firm.

Humility

I am committed to the ongoing practice of reconciliation - continuously learning, unlearning, and listening. Community members are the experts of their own lands and lives. My job is to support, not lead.
